My first project of this unit was my monster project, assigned for the benefit of 3rd graders who get to receive it when it has been completed. I honestly adored making this piece, it was incredibly entertaining to take the inspirational drawings of younger kids and interpret them in a way that was doable in a three dimensional medium. I had a very easy time sculpting the piece, but found a lot of trouble for some reason with the clear glaze. It wouldn't applly in an evenly thin layer, and, there fore, was weird and watery as a final result. Other than that, I wouldn't do anything differently.
Plan:
1. Make a cylindar and carve it from the bottom, then replace the bottom with two more carved out cylindars for legs
2. Sculpt facial details and horns
3 Hollow mouth and form teeth
4. Glaze!
My third project of this unit was my set of four. They were a matching set, as required. I decided to make four plates, all with a different little fruit on them. I loved how they all turned out, but, when they got fired, I put them on the wrong shelf, and they were put on top of one another, which sealed them together. Other than incorrect user error, I wouldn't do anything different.
Plan:
1. Use a template for my plates, some circular opening to mold them all the same size
2. Form them into plates and not just discs
3. Glaze them all their individual colors, then add their fruit details.
My second project in this unit is my alebrije, which was really difficult to do for me. I couldn't get inspired for any kind of animal, no matter how hard I tried, which was really frustrating. Even still, after painting the piece in acrylic, I'm still not happy about the result. I feel I couldv'e done much better not only on my skill set and my sculpting, but also on my time frame provided. If I were to do it all again, I would do it entirely differently.
Plan:
1. Choose a keystone species to work on (I chose bear)
2. Sculpt the piece from bottom to top, which I did
3. Use pipe cleaners for the feet, and paint the piece
The last project I did in this unit was a lidded box, which I had so much fun doing. I had to put a lot of trust in the glaze I used, because when I first applied it it was dark gray and watery. It was like magic when it came out of the kiln, green and glittering. The only thing I would potentially change was making a lip on the inside to hold the lid a little more securely.
Plan:
1. Make the piece into a vague monstera shape
2. Carve out the inside and separate the lid from the box
3. Sculpt details of the leaf and the inscription on the inside
4 Glaze!
