My first project in this unit was a slump mold, and I was really thrilled how it turned out. I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing, since I had been sick the day when most students had started, but I was able to get a bowl and shape it how I wanted,  when a couple pieces broke off. I persisted, nonetheless, and just improvised, and I loved the way it ended up turning out, and I turned it into a ramen bowl.

Plan:

1. Use wet clay, shape it around a bowl

2. Leave until bone dry

3. Take it off of the bowl it was dried on

4. Underglaze it!

My second project in this unit was sgraffito, which is the process of painting and then chipping away at the underglaze to carve designs into it. My idea was to make a soap bar holder that was ocean themed for my grandparents because they absolutely adore the ocean. I actually have no notes on this- I'm super happy with how it turned out.

Plan:

1. Make a rough rectangle shape and shape it loosely into a flip flop

2. Underglaze a bright red

3. Chip away at the glaze to make the designs

My third project in this unit was relief carving, and I had the idea to make a ring/jewelry holder in the shape of a lilypad, and it was going so well, before I pressed too hard on the piece while trying to carve into it, and everything shattered. If I were to do this project again, I wouldn't let it get as bone dry before carving so that it was more maluable.

Plan:

1. Make an oval out of wedged clay and cut a slice out

2. Create ridges around the whole side

3. Scrape out clay outside the plant veins

My fourth piece in this unit was coil building, but this was unfortunately the only photo I got of the outside of the piece before one of my peers accidentally knocked it out of my hands.  I was never very attached to this piece, thankfully, but since I didn't have very much time with it, I feel like I don't have very much left to reflect on.

Plan:

1. Roll out/extrude columns of clay

2. Make the outside one long coil

3. Make the inside many different coils

4.Glaze, maybe?
